The Valley's art community is remembering the man behind several murals in Downtown Fresno and elsewhere.

FranCisco Vargas was taken off life support over the weekend, and had been hospitalized after suffering from a stroke last week. He was also diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma in July.

Over his career he's painted several murals throughout the city -- including the large display at the 1612 Fulton Development. Vargas was named artist of the year at the Hispanic Heritage Awards last year.

"FranCisco was probably the premier muralist in Fresno County and he did the mural on the side of our building -- and he did it, gosh -- so well. He will definitely be missed," said Scott Robertson, Selma Mayor.

FranCisco Vargas is survived by his mother and two daughters. His family plans a celebration of his life next month.
