Fresno couple carjacked after being witness to triple shooting in San Francisco

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno couple was carjacked and witnesses to a triple shooting. The harrowing experience began in San Francisco at Twin Peaks Sunday. The Central Valley couple drove there for a Valentine's Day trip but were forced to come back on a train after their SUV was stolen.

Sitting on the sidewalk of a San Francisco neighborhood is a black GMC Yukon. The place where the suspect responsible for stealing it from a Central Valley couple was arrested. Robert Torres and Jessica Costa tell Action News they drove their car up to Twin Peaks Saturday night for a Valentine's Day weekend getaway. "We were just sightseeing, enjoying the city lights, you know, walking together enjoying our vacation," said Costa.

But when they got back into their car to leave, their night of bliss took a sudden turn. "Once I reversed that's when the pops went off," said Torres.

"When I look back to the left we see the gunman coming towards us, kinda with his back turned, and when he turned around, and had the gun in his hand and pointed it straight at Robert," Costa explained.

The couple said a gunman wearing a white shirt and black sweater made a firm request. "Told us to just get out the car, get out the car," said Torres.

Torres and Costa did just what they were told, jumping out while the gunman jumped in-- taking off with their car. "That's when I begin calling 911, and we see bodies of the men that were just shot," said Costa.

Two were dead, the other injured. "One guy was like, behind the car. Like by the back tires." Costa continued, "and on the other side of the wall you see the other guy there."

A frightening moment for the couple who was stranded in the middle of a crime scene, with no money, no car-- just a cell phone. "We didn't have any ID's, we didn't have nothing," said Costa

What they did have was a little change in their pockets, enough to buy two Amtrak tickets back to Fresno that would end an unforgettable Valentine's Day trip. "One for the books, to say the least," said Costa.

"Never gonna forget that one," said Torres.

San Francisco police arrested the suspect Monday night at his home in Richmond.
