Fresno husband and wife overwhelmed by support after gruesome attack

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A husband and wife who nearly died in a gruesome attack said they're overwhelmed by the support they're receiving from the community.

Investigators said Gustavo Hernandez, 20, -- a family friend of the couple -- tried to kill them both one month ago Tuesday.

To the average person, this might look like an ordinary metal trailer. But to Elias Sanchez it might as well be made of gold.

"This never happened to me before. No one ever gave me something for free like that something like this," said Sanchez.

23-year-old Elias and his 21-year-old wife Francisca were attacked in their home last month. Investigators say the suspect nearly killed them and stole their trailer. In it, landscaping tools for Elias' job. So when he got a call from a stranger this weekend, he couldn't believe it.

"He called us and said how's it going -- I think he saw it on the news -- he said did anyone donate a trailer for you? And I was like no. And he said how about you can come this afternoon and you can have mine," said Elias.

It's a $2,000 trailer. Nicer and bigger than the one originally stolen. And that's not the only donation they've gotten.

"We had a couple go by the house and give us some money so the first thing we did was go give a down payment on a machine for my husband," said Francisca. She still has a hard time talking. Investigators say Gustavo Hernandez, 20, slit her throat. She's in speech therapy. But there's a chance she could never talk normally again. She works at a call center and doctors are telling her she might not be able to go back.

"Sometimes you don't realize how strong you are until you go through something like this," said Francisca.

Elias was beaten into a coma he said and is still recovering from his injuries. Even though these are dark times he said there's hope, "I still believe that there is still good people out there and it's wonderful." Because sometimes all it takes is a helping hand to lighten the load.
