FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno man was shot and killed on his doorstep Wednesday morning. Fresno police say it happened in front of several kids at an apartment on McKinley Avenue near Millbrook Avenue. The victim died at the scene, and detectives are still searching for the gunman.

Inside the small apartment complex in Central Fresno, there are quiet people, dealing with tragedy -- a shooting that left a 28-year-old man dead inside his home.

Burrel, the apartment manager said, "Just a gentle soul, I can't imagine anyone wanting to hurt him or him provoking it for that fact."

Burrel couldn't name the victim, but he says he talked with the man's girlfriend moments after the shots were fired. "She said someone had knocked on the door, and when he opened it, they fired on him," he said.

Police say the victim died at the scene in front of five people, his girlfriend and four kids.

Fresno Police Lt. Mark Salazar says witnesses gave statements at police headquarters, and investigators have an idea of what the motive was. "There might be a interpersonal dispute prior to the shooting," Salazar said. "So, we're looking at that right now."

Burrel finds it odd. He says the man who lived in the apartment never had problems with anyone, and he was a hard worker who was just trying to support his family. "He's always had a smile on his face. He's always waving at me," Burrel said.
