FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno man got stabbed in the stomach when he tried to stop a guy from stealing his bicycle this afternoon.

Police shut down the area near Cedar and Dakota for a couple hours as they looked for the suspect. They say the 58-year-old victim said he was hanging out near a shopping center there when the other guy grabbed his bike and kept going. But he didn't give up on his bike so easily -- he followed the thief.

"During the time the victim followed him, the victim tried to get his property back, that being the bicycle, and at that time the suspect stabbed him," said Lt. David Ramos, Fresno Police Department.

Police say the guy rode off after the stabbing and left the victim bleeding on the side of the road. He went to the hospital in serious condition.

Investigators say there was a lot of traffic in the area when this happened at around 4 p.m., so they're hoping for tips from people who were passing by.
