FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Fresno Police need help finding a hit-and-run driver who injured a doctor last month while he was cycling home from work.

Dr. William Dominic is known for his tenacity on two wheels, "I think he commuted every day," the doctor's friend, Ben Medrano said.

He's also known for his 24 years of dedication to the burn center at Community Regional Medical Center. He's the director and the surgeon who treated Fresno Fire Captain, Pete Dern, one of the city's beloved firefighters. Sgt. Michael Landon with the Fresno Police Dept. said, "He's helped lot of people in the city of Fresno."

For the past few weeks, the doctor was a patient at the same hospital-- a victim of a hit-and-run crash. On Friday, February 26th, he was cycling home from work around one in the morning when a car slammed into him from behind and took off. Sgt. Landon says another driver saw the car heading east on Gettysburg from Fresno Street with a bicycle dragging behind it and the doctor wasn't far away. "There's probably not a lot of traffic out there at that time of night and for somebody to find him and get him the help that he needed was crucial," Sgt. Landon added.

Doctor Dominic's injuries were severe but he's doing a lot better. He went home from the hospital on Wednesday and released a statement in hopes of finding the driver who hit him. "My job is to heal people and save lives. I would hate to think this person could do this to someone else," the statement read.

Ben Medrano said, "Very sad, that somebody could do that and drive home and be ok with themselves."

Medrano is hoping someone knows something about the crash and will send a tip to detectives. "For all the great stuff he does for the world," Medrano said, "you really hate to see it happen to a guy like that."

Meanwhile Doctor Dominic is keeping his head up. He hasn't lost that tenacity and he told Action News he'll be back after a few months of recovery.

Detectives are searching for an older model tan Camry and the bicycle the doctor was riding. If you have any information, you are asked to call the Fresno Police Department.
