Police say a man who was inside his car with a gun threatening to kill himself in Southeast Fresno surrendered early Sunday morning. The scene unfolded in the area of Kings Canyon Road and Clovis Avenue.

The man spoke with Fresno police via phone for several hours. An Action News camera captured the moment when he stepped out of the car late Saturday night as if to surrender but then got back in the vehicle.

He eventually surrendered to officers around 1 a.m. Authorities say the man was not arrested but was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation.

Employees at the nearby Dollar Tree store were evacuated as a precaution. Roads in the area were closed but later reopened.
