FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- There is some encouraging news for the Fresno firefighter who fell through the roof of a burning home last weekend.
Captain Pete Dern remains in critical condition but is breathing on his own after having his breathing tube removed on Friday. He's scheduled to undergo another surgery for his burns on Tuesday.
Dern has received tremendous community support, with several blood drives in his honor and more than $100,000 raised online.
But the Fresno Firefighters Association is warning about people trying to take advantage of the accident to scam people. The group is reminding everyone the only two approved ways to help are through a blood donation or YouCaring.com.
