The historic drought is taking a toll on the summer fun along the Kings River.

FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The historic drought is taking a toll on the summer fun along the Kings River. Many families were out enjoying the water near Winton Park in Fresno County over the weekend, but downstream near Reedley, the river is dry.

Officials say this year the Kings River will get about 15 percent of the normal water it gets from Pine Flat Lake. "This is the worst year for water supply the Kings River ever will have experienced in any year since records were first kept in 1898," said J. Randall McFarland of the Kings River Water Association.

Water officials are warning swimmers. They say when the river flow peaks in July, the water will be moving very fast and will be very cold.
