Man dies after being struck by car in Farmersville
Police say the driver of the car was trying to avoid hitting a 54-year-old woman crossing the street.

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A man died Sunday night after a car swerved to avoid a pedestrian in Farmersville and crashed into him.

Police say the driver of the car was trying to avoid hitting a 54-year-old woman crossing the street. When he swerved to miss her, he ended up hitting a man on the sidewalk on Visalia Road.

"There was a female that was crossing the roadway," Farmersville Police Chief Mario Krstic said. "He swerved to miss the female mid-block and he lost control of the vehicle, hit the curb. Somewhere within that distance, he went up on the curb and struck a pedestrian that was walking."

That pedestrian is a man in his 30s. His body was found on the other side of a wrought iron fence. First-responders tried life-saving measures but the victim died on scene.

As crews worked to repair the damage, neighbors stood close by in shock. One man saying he was there to see if the victim was a family member or friend.

Carol Quallos lives in this area too. She walks the stretch of road often and she knows this could have easily happened to her.

"I pray for the family," she said. "It's really scary. I wouldn't want to be in their position the family position to have to go through this."

And one woman who stays at a nearby apartment complex is concerned a child will be next that because of the number of drivers who speed down the road.

Police said they were able to identify him, but have not released that information yet. At this point alcohol is not a factor, police are looking to see if the driver was speeding.
