Man loses winning $1 million Powerball ticket sold in Southern California

ROSEMEAD, Calif. -- A man who purchased a winning $1 million Powerball ticket at a supermarket in Rosemead lost his ticket, according to California Lottery officials.

The winning ticket was sold at Rosemead Supermarket at 8815 East Valley Boulevard on Sept. 13.

Lottery officials released surveillance video of the mystery man purchasing the winning ticket, hoping to find him.

"We know exactly to the minute and the second when the ticket was purchased," said David Kauls, manager of the Lottery's Santa Fe Springs District Office. "We'll work with the owner of the store that sold the ticket and try to pull up their video, if they have surveillance cameras. If the times match up, we have an idea of who the winner is and grab a photo of that video."

The man saw himself on the news and came forward, but without the ticket.

His ticket, worth $1,098,624, matched the numbers 37, 6, 1, 53 and 16, missing only the Powerball number 27.

The deadline passed Thursday at 5 p.m. His prize money will now be transferred to public schools in California.

In its 30-year history, California Lottery officials say nearly $800 million in prize money has gone unclaimed.

Rosemead Supermarket received a bonus of $5,493 for selling the winning ticket.
