Man sets himself on fire at Starbucks in SoCal

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES -- A man is in critical condition after setting himself on fire in a Starbucks bathroom in Van Nuys on Tuesday.

Authorities say the man entered the bathroom at Starbucks in the 15000 block of West Sherman Way just after 8 a.m. Moments later, bystanders heard an explosive sound, and the man staggered out of the bathroom engulfed in flames.

As he collapsed near the front entrance, people at the Starbucks helped put the flames out.

The man was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition, with burns covering 90 percent of his body.

It's unknown what kind of accelerant the man used.

The Starbucks store was closed due to the investigation. No further information was immediately available.
