Teen riding bike dies after being struck by vehicle in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The California Highway Patrol says a 14-year-old boy from Selma is dead after being struck by a car.

The deadly crash happened while the boy was riding his bicycle in the eastbound lanes of Nebraska Avenue, just west of Highway 43, outside of Selma.

Investigators say the boy's relative -- possibly his father or step-father -- was riding with the boy and saw the deadly impact.

The CHP says the 82-year-old driver and a passenger were in the car. They are distraught over the crash, but they were uninjured.

It appears that the boy was not wearing a helmet at this time. The driver told the CHP he went to pass the bike riders when the teen swerved in front of him.

"That's part of the investigation, figure out what's going on," said Axel Reyes with the California Highway Patrol. "I'm not sure if they knew the car was coming up behind them or if they saw it or what."

Officer Reyes says the teen was riding his bike home to Selma.

The driver in the crash was not cited by officers. They say they still have several interviews to do before they can say who legally is at fault for the boy's death.
