Action News is hearing from the wife of Fresno Fire Captain Pete Dern for the first time since a devastating accident. The Fresno firefighter fell through a burning roof in late March and burned 65 percent of his body.

Moments of sheer terror captured on video. A passerby locked in on Dern moments before he fell through a roof into a bed of flames. The clip went viral, and his story has reached millions of people across the country.

"About how dangerous their jobs can be; every day they risk their lives," said Dern's wife, Kelly Dern.

Since that horrific March day, Kelly said she's hardly left his bedside. Their 25th anniversary was spent together at the hospital, remaining as one in sickness and in health.

"He can't feed himself, can't take care of himself, so I'm here to help him do that and just to be with him," Kelly said.

She posts progress updates on Facebook, like one from Monday -- a glimpse into his long road to recovery. His only daughter, McKenzie, commutes back and forth from San Luis Obispo during the school year to see her dad.

"Being an only child they're all I got, so I have been trying to do everything for him," McKenzie Dern.

On Wednesday, the Dern family received more than $8,000 -- a culmination of several community benefits held in Captain Dern's honor.

"I think having the fire department there from day one, it made it easier to come in and face all of this," Kelly said.
