2 men arrested after officer involved shooting near Fresno State, police search for more suspects

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- An investigation is underway after an officer-involved shooting across the street from Fresno State. Police have two men in connection with the shooting but they said there are two more suspects that they are still searching for.

Officers describe the scene as very chaotic Tuesday night with several shots being fired and trying to save the victim.

Around 10:00 p.m., one officer responded to a call of a suspicious person walking around knocking on doors. When the officer arrived there were several people shooting at a victim. The officer approached them and at that time the suspects ran and the officer rendered first aid to the victim. The officer heard more shots being fired so he shot back.

The victim is being identified as a 33-year-old male who sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his upper torso and right arm. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he underwent surgery and is now stable.

The victim's brother, 34-year-old Jimmy Martinez who was at the scene of the shooting was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm. A second suspect, 25-year-old Erik Martinez was also arrested for resisting arrest and interfering in the investigation. Erik is the cousin of Jimmy.

Officers continued to comb through the scene Wednesday morning at the University Inn. Crime scene tape was up blocking off anyone from going into that portion of the parking lot.

"I was very impressed by his performance, he was very calm under an extremely stressful situation with an active gun battle. This is a 20 year veteran of the department-- he was very calm, very composed giving very clear commands to everybody," said Fresno Police Deputy Chief Andrew Hall. "Once the scene was stabilized, it was three or four minutes before back up arrived-- he was alone for quite a while."

Two handguns, a .22 caliber semi-automatic and a .38 revolver, have been recovered at the scene but is not clear who that gun belongs to.

Streets were closed surrounding the crime scene but have since reopened.
