Woodward Dog Park getting an expansion

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Crews are at work piecing together Woodward Dog Park's new expansion, while the dogs supervise or greet their every move.

A fence and gates have been added to create a bigger play area for small breeds.

"It's nice to see how many people want to do things for pets here in Fresno," said Mona Ahmed, Furry Friends Foundation President.

Ahmed is President of the Furry Friends Foundation which supports the city-run dog park. The group raised $5,000 through yard sales and donations to expand the park.

Art Mora brings his dog Abbi to the park. He said it is a great resource for pet owners.

"We accommodate all of the dogs here, but the smaller dogs get intimidated and they don't want to be in with the larger dogs. So for them to have more rooms I think it is great."

On average, about 60 dogs visit the park each day with their owners, and Ahmed said on the weekend hundreds can stop at the park.

In addition to the small dog run, there's an area to help those transition to the space.

"Only little dogs in the area that can play here and then we have another section it's like a time out or a naughty dog area," said Ahmed.

Owners hope this new addition will help entice more people and their pets to come together.

"Dogs become friends too and so do the people," said Ahmed.

Their next aim to keep adding amenities like shade covers to the park to keep everyone cool and using the facility year round.

Fresno Furry Friends said the new expansion should be open in a couple of weeks and they are looking forward to celebrate with their furry friends.
