FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Two candidates are officially in the running to replace former State Assemblyman Henry T. Perea from Fresno.

Republican Clint Olivier received the paperwork to run in both the special election and the primary election to fill the seat. Olivier is in his second term as a member of the Fresno City Council.

Democrat Joaquin Arambula has also filed the paperwork and brought his family along for the ride. Arambula is a local physician.

"As an emergency room doctor I faced great challenges, this is not one of them. Running for public office is a dream of mine and I want to make a difference in our community and I would really enjoy this office," said Arambula.

"It's like climbing a mountain and it's daunting when you see all the work that needs to be done but it's something that I'm more than happy to take on," said Olivier.

Henry T. Perea resigned from the seat last week, with one year left in his term. The governor is required to call a special election to fill the seat.
