Polls open today for California's 31st Assembly District special election

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The winner of this election is only guaranteed the seat through November to finish out Henry T. Perea's term.

The race is on as Joaquin Arambula (D), Ted Miller (D), and Clint Olivier (R) face off. All three candidates running in Tuesday's special election for the vacant Assembly seat in District 31 spent their time trying to boost voter turnout. But the winner, if any candidate receives 50 percent plus one vote, will only serve until December. The primary election for the seat's two year term is in June.

Of the 170-thousand registered voters in the district, 85-thousand are mail-in voters. So far, less than a quarter have been turned in for the 31st special election. Close to half of the districts voters are registered democrats, but election officials say it's anyone's race as they're expecting a low voter turn out.
