FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A pregnant woman was killed early Sunday after shots rang out at an apartment complex in Central Fresno, according to the family of the victim.
Family members of Amber Baker, 20, said she was shot at an apartment complex near Blackstone and Griffith Avenues during a party. The Fresno Police Department did not identify the victim but said a homicide occurred at the complex around 3 a.m.
Baker's family said she had a baby four months ago and recently learned she was pregnant again, but detectives could not confirm that information.
The victim's sister, Katie Martin, says Baker was gunned down while in bed with her baby boy.
"She graduated high school, and she did everything she was supposed to do," she said. "She has a beautiful baby that she loves so much, and he is going to grow up without a mom, and it's devastating."
At the Griffith Gardens Apartment Complex, loved ones say it is where she lived with three other people. And neighbors told them what they heard moments before Baker's life was taken.
"According to some neighbors, they heard arguing and, from what we've heard so far, someone went into her room, an unknown male shot her," Martin said.
Fresno police are looking for that person and said several people were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting. All of them have been taken in for questioning.
"They are all pretty shook up," Lt. Stephen Viveros with the Fresno Police Department said. "They're still grieving, a lot of emotion."
And it's a lot of emotion from the family, and they are hoping anyone with any information will come forward and bring closure to this unthinkable tragedy.
"Somebody knows something and they're not saying," Martin said. "And we just don't understand why someone would take her life in the middle of the night while she was asleep or with my nephew, we don't know. We don't know."
