Jose Mourinho to Man United recruits: Join LA Galaxy if you want beaches

Jose Mourinho has no interest in signing anyone whose desire to play for Manchester United is tempered by concerns over location and weather.

While the Portuguese's first season in the Old Trafford hot seat has brought success in the EFL Cup and Community Shield, Champions League qualification remains in the balance.

Returning to European football's top table remains the overriding objective, but plans to bolster United's squad are under way behind the scenes.

Mourinho has given executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward "difficult'' but realistic targets, with the manager sure they will "do something interesting'' to improve the squad as talk over a summer move for Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann persists.

The France international has previously spoken about concerns over English weather and Mourinho gave short shift to suggestions that the allure of other cities could influence targets.

"If a player wants to move to London, enjoy London -- we don't want you,'' Mourinho said.

"If the first thing you think is where you're going to live, well, think Los Angeles.

"Galaxy would be the first choice and then Vitoria Setubal, go to the beach every day. There are beautiful places to live and to play.

"We want people who are really engaged with the first contact.

"We want people that if I call some guy or if Mr Woodward calls some player or some agent, we want people who are immediately engaged, immediately dreaming about coming.

"This is the profile of players we want. If you don't want to come to us, good luck, enjoy your other club.''

Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko and Atletico defender Jose Gimenez are others linked to a club whose attractiveness will go up a notch with Champions League qualification.

Europa League glory offers a return to the continent's top table, as does a top-four Premier League finish, with United entering the weekend four points shy of nearest rivals Liverpool, albeit boasting two games in hand.

"We have things still to play for,'' Mourinho said ahead of Saturday's match against West Brom.

"I can say that if we are not fighting for the top four, if we are not fighting to try to win the Europa League, I would say it's a great moment to forget this season and to do everything thinking about next season.

"That's not the case because every match now for us is a big match.

"Europa League is play quarterfinal or go home, in the Premier League one more match, one more victory we are in the run.

"One defeat maybe you are not in the run anymore, so we just have to think about this season now.''

It is hard to look too far ahead given United have such a taxing schedule.

West Brom's visit is the first of nine matches United face in April, with May promising to be no easier if they progress to the Europa League final.

"They have to be resilient, they have to be professionals,'' Mourinho said of his players.

"They have to be team players, they have to understand the team's needs. They have to go to the limits, they have to play with small injuries. They have to play with pain, play with fatigue because there is no other chance.

"When I look, for example, two weeks we are going to play against Chelsea - before we play Anderlecht and after we play Anderlecht. Chelsea are on holidays. Before and after they are on holidays. You can name their team, you can say this one, this one, this one, this one and this one.

"In 15 days, maybe the Premier League is not important for us. Maybe it is.

"If we keep winning matches now, that match against Chelsea is an important match for us. If we lose matches now, that match is not important. The important matches are only Anderlecht.

"So we want every match to be important until the end of the season and if we manage that, to be in the run in the two competitions, the boys have to be very resilient, very strong mentally.''
