OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Athletics placed left-hander Sean Manaea on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left forearm Tuesday and recalled left-hander Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Nashville.

Manaea, 24, underwent an MRI earlier Tuesday that showed a minor muscle injury, A's manager Bob Melvin said.

"I think I'll be good in 15 days," Manaea said. "I don't have any negative thoughts."

Manaea, who made his major league debut in April, was 2-3 with a 4.17 ERA over his past six starts after going 0-1 with an 11.37 ERA in his first three starts.

"All things were pointing in a good direction for him, so this is a little bit of a setback," Melvin said. "When you walk out there and what you hear is 'forearm,' you're always to an extent thinking the worst, but that's not the case here, so we'll look at the bright side of it."

Surkamp, who was scheduled to start Tuesday night against the Texas Rangers, is 0-3 with a 6.41 ERA in three previous stints with the A's.
