San Francisco Giants fans are celebrating Thursday morning after the team managed to win its third World Series title in five years.
SAN FRANCISCO (KFSN) -- Early Thursday morning, the team returned to San Francisco with the World Series trophy. The guys took down the Kansas City Royals last night, behind their star pitcher Madison Bumgarner.
It was an unforgettable night for the Giants, but the celebration in
the Mission District and near At&T Park were out of control at times overnight. Officers were in formation with riot gear between 19th and
20th Streets, and they faced many problems.
San Francisco Police say bottles, firecrackers and M80's were thrown
at officers as they tried to disperse the crowds while helping out
firefighters as they put out bonfires. Multiple officers suffered minor injuries, with one taken to the hospital. A police truck was also damaged by thrown bottles.
"I saw bombs and bottles. I saw people jumping people. Luckily it wasn't me, but I saw a lot of crazy stuff going on. I tried to walk around and keep a low profile and not be a part of that," said Michael Mems.
"A large number of fans had gathered out in the streets to celebrate. Some fans have set bonfires, initially in the Mission. Police and firefighters worked together. As soon as the initial bonfires were set, they were put out pretty rapidly," said Gordon Shyy, San Francisco Police Department.
Police say two people were shot. One man was hit in the arm at 21st
and Valencia at about 8:45 Wednesday night, and another victim walked into
San Francisco general with a non-life threatening wound. Another man was stabbed multiple times.
MUNI said they deactivated some power lines for safety reasons, and only put out diesel buses in some areas.
Police are also gearing up for a busy day on Friday. A parade celebrating the Giants World Series Championship will start at noon and end at the Civic Center Plaza.
