Self-sustaining information kiosk unveiled in Fresno's Tower District

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- There's a new place to stay up to date with community events in Fresno's Tower District. An unveiling ceremony took place at Olive and Wishon avenues on Monday with lots of cheers and a little music.

The information kiosk is years in the making. It's primarily made out of a recycled propane tank with low voltage LED lights and solar panels on top. It's completely self-sustaining with no tie to the main grid.

Its creator, Michael Stevens, says the project has been well received by the neighborhood. He said, "I was amazed. It was great. I mean so many people support this community. To see everybody out here oohing and ahhing. It's wonderful. It's great."

"A lot of other social groups don't really see each other's stuff. Tower is a moving area of town -- the urban part of town where other people walk through and get the traffic. So you could stumble on any kind of activity," said Tea Gonzalez, a bicycle polo player.

Organizers say everyone is welcome to post an upcoming community event. The kiosk will be monitored weekly to make sure the postings stay current.
