City of Visalia making art out of trash enclosures

VISALIA, Calif. (KFSN) -- The city of Visalia is working to turn what is traditionally thought of as an eyesore into something visually appealing for those who visit downtown.

The city has started turning trash enclosures into colorful and whimsical pieces of art.

The project is sponsored by two $5,000 grants, and the city has been working with Urbanists Collective, which specializes in spray paint art.

So far, five trash enclosures have been painted, including one done by junior high students.

Visalia Mayor Steve Nelsen said he plans to take pictures of the unique art and showcase it in the rotunda of the state capital.

"That's what I'm trying to do is get people to come in and they look at it and they remember what they see," said Nelsen. "And I think they're going to see some really what I call out their kind of artwork. But it's something that people are going to resonate with, and I think it will bring people downtown."

Nelsen said the next phase is to paint at least five more enclosures, plus wrap some electrical boxes.
