Homeland Security announces plans to expedite airport security lines this summer

LOS ANGELES -- Long lines at TSA checkpoints could be getting worse as the summer travel season approaches, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials announced Friday steps to try and deal with the problem.

Lisa Resnick arrived in Los Angeles from Newark Aiport and the unusually long wait there made her think twice about flying. She also said signing up for TSA PreCheck didn't help her much this time around.

"They merged the PreCheck line with the regular line. We got to the airport an hour and a half early, and we waited in line for over an hour," Resnick said.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson addressed passenger concerns Friday and revealed the department is expediting the hiring of hundreds of officers, deploying additional canine teams and working with airlines to reduce the size and number of carry-on luggage.

"We've developed a plan -- an aggressive plan -- to deal with it and to provide continued aviation security for the American people," he said.

Officials said they will also immediately increase overtime, and they hope to hire about 768 new officers as early as mid-June.
