FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The enormous Tubbs Fire is claiming lives in Wine Country reducing more than 500 homes and businesses down to charred rubble.

The Santa Rosa neighborhood looks like a burned out wasteland. Many of the shelters are at capacity with evacuees hoping their home is still standing.

"I'm exhausted, I'm worried about my son and myself, wondering what we're going to do if we don't have a home," said Janet Pyne.

The destructive blaze has burned 27,000 acres--incinerating everything in its path and already killing nine people.

The Sonoma County sheriff says they are still searching for hundreds of people. Their safety is still unknown.

"We have a team of people no working on finding the missing persons. There are 240 missing people reported as of now--of that 240. We've located 57 people safely. A lot of communication issues, a lot of power issues," said Rob Giordano.

Hundreds of fire crews are coming from all over the state to help crews from the city of Merced and Los Banos are already in the area.

Emergency crews say they're hoping to work on the southern end of the fire but as it continues to spread more people are being forced to pack up and leave their homes.

"This is still a huge event, this is an enormous fire," said Giordano.

People are counting to pack up and leave as quickly as they can--dozens of areas still under evacuation.

Officials here are doing some damage assessment, and fire crews hope to have more containment by the end of today or tomorrow.
