Madera County business owners preparing for this year's storms

NORTH VALLEY, Calif. (KFSN) -- The gentle trickling of the creek can be heard along the High Sierra RV Park and Campsite.

Along the serene waters sit several reminders of the damage caused by last year's floods.

"You can also see some down trees from last year," said Kathleen Frye.

Record-breaking rains drenched parts of the Madera County Foothills. Kathleen Frye says there was so much water, some of the yurts on her property floated down the river.

"Yurts to sit at the end by the end of the big tree," said Frye.

The yurts still have not been replaced and Frye says she does not know if they will return.

"We actually bought flood insurance to cover us if we decide to do anything with the yurts and bring them back to the same area to where they were," said Frye.

The cleanup is still underway as debris adorns the tree branches, marking where the water once reached.

Madera County Supervisor Tom Wheeler says he and the several other volunteers recently came to the river with the goal of clearing up debris.

He does not think they will get another downpour like last year, but one concern is mud from the railroad fire moving downstream.

He says they have already installed the necessary precautions near the burn areas.

"We start right then fixing areas where we think it could flood, wash mud, trash what have you down the river," said Wheeler.

Despite the loss of the unique tents Frye says business is good. She says this year, they have a game plan in case another wet season comes their way.

"If we get something where it gets too high, we'll be moving everything out the camping area and to higher ground. We'll be ready this year a little more. A little more aware of what's around us," said Frye.
