STRAWBERRY, Calif. (KFSN) -- A two-year-old boy and his father, subjects of a statewide Amber Alert, have been found dead in Tuolumne County, according to family members.

Crime tape marks the spot where an Amber Alert came to an end in a remote area off Clark Fork Road near the Sandflat campground.

The Tuolumne County Sheriff's Office says this is where the bodies were found Sunday night, along with the red Hyundai Elantra that law enforcement across the state had been searching for all weekend.

Relatives tell Action News Sarah Weir was notified Monday morning that the bodies are that of her two-year-old son, John, and her estranged husband, 32-year-old Steven Weir.

The Merced County Sheriff's Office says that Weir abducted his son over the weekend, triggering the statewide alert.

She was living in fear that this could happen when Action News spoke with her over the phone Sunday night. "This is absolutely my worst nightmare, and I feel like I'm living in a dream that won't stop, I can't wake up from this. It won't go away," she said.

The couple was going through a divorce, and Sarah says Steven had been aggressive and emotional. On Saturday, Steven was supposed to meet with the boy's mother, Sarah. However, he never showed up at their child custody exchange location.

She believed he was capable of hurting her son after the pair disappeared from the Merced area on Friday, but she and many others were hoping and praying for a different outcome.

Investigators have not yet released any details about the cause of death or how they discovered the bodies. Authorities will update the public after getting more information from the pathologist.

A relative told Action News Monday that Sarah is understandably too distraught to speak publicly, but she wanted to thank everyone who searched for her son and shared information. The family is also asking for continued prayers.
