The highway patrol says the driver of a Honda Civic was killed when he tried to pull out onto Clovis Avenue just north of Ashlan at around 8 o'clock.
His car was hit by a woman driving a Toyota Prius southbound.
The man was rushed to the hospital where he later died.
He has not yet been identified.
The woman in the Prius was not hurt.
Northbound lanes of Clovis Avenue were closed more than two hours for the investigation.
