The family has started a GoFundMe page to help his mother with medical expenses.
The boy was shot Tuesday night as he walked with his mother near Valley Street and Warthan in Coalinga. Police said five to eight gunshots were fired, and the suspects ran away.
They believe the incident involved gangs but they do not believe the boy was the intended target.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call police.
