Dr. George Alvarado, who is the principal, said that there were over 40 speakers talking about the importance of literacy and reading.

"I hope they (students) not only learn the importance and recognize the importance of literacy but always they get to see people who are professionals and role models for them to pursue careers beyond Martinez Elementary," he explained.
He added it's great that dozens of people came out to help teach the students.

"We have Cpt. Martinez here who is the son.... of the gentleman who the school is named after," he said "Its just fantastic to have so many people who have taken time away from their schedules to come and support the kids".

The students were also able to ask the speaker questions. The questions geared towards the speaker's job and what it took to get in that position.
