It happened just before midnight along Interstate 5 near Highway 41, south of Kettleman City.
Officers say the 29-year-old driver of a Honda Civic drifted off the road, hit the shoulder and the vehicle overturned.
The driver suffered major injuries and was taken to a local hospital. His two-year-old passenger died.
Investigators say they believe alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.
