The Sanger Police Department has identified the officer as 26-year-old Manvir Dhanoa.

Dhanoa joined the department in March 2023.

The California Highway Patrol says the crash happened on Millerton Road near Sky Harbour Road at about 5:30 am.

Officers say Dhanoa was going east on Millerton when he went off the roadway, and the car flipped at least once.

He was thrown from the car and died at the scene.

"Each time I had a conversation with him, his enthusiasm was infectious. He was just what you would suspect from a brand new police officer who's anxious to be a part of this profession," said Sanger Police Chief Greg Garner.

Flags at all city facilities will be flown at half-staff until Dhanoa is laid to rest.

"He was doing a fantastic job. Really enthusiastic, he had really taken to the community even though he wasn't from here and it's just a tremendous, tragic loss for everyone at this station who knew Manny," said Garner.

A memorial has been set up at the Sanger Police Department's headquarters, where the public is invited to pay their respects.

EDITOR'S NOTE: The original story says both the man and woman were thrown from the car and that alcohol was found inside. The CHP later retracted that information.
