Police were first alerted by the department's ShotSpotter system.

When officers arrived, they found a man in his 40s and a woman in her 50s who were injured by gunfire.

The man was rushed to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

The woman was struck in the head. As of Thursday evening, police say she's alert in the hospital.

Officers say they found three to four people in the area but none were willing to help their investigation.

"Numerous individuals left and did not provide us with information. These are the types of challenges that are associated with this area. I can't tell you at this point if this is gang related or gang motivated," explained Paul Cervantes with the Fresno Police Department.

Police say there is no description of the shooter or shooters at this time.

One neighbor, who has lived in the area for about a year, was woken up by the gunfire.

"It was a noise like someone was knocking on the door and when I woke up I saw police there. That's when I realized there was a shooting," mentioned Orlando Vasquez.

Vasquez says it's not uncommon to hear people firing guns in the area but this morning's violence hit a little too close to home.

"You feel safe because you see the police are responding to the problem and are trying to do something but at the same time they will not be there when they are shooting, you know," said Vasquez.

Police say the shooting happened in the middle of the street.

This is the 16th homicide in Fresno so far this year.
