Sheriff's deputies say a gunman fired several rounds in a field just off Highway 99 and northwest of the city of Merced. The victim had a few gunshot wounds, and he ran away from the scene.
But deputies found him collapsed on someone's front lawn. Investigators say the man died on his way to the hospital.
Detectives don't know what the motive for the shooting was and no arrests have been announced.
