Drivers spotted a body on the highway shoulder near the Marks Avenue exit just before 7 a.m. California Highway Patrol officers rushed to the scene but found out they needed to hand off the case to Fresno Police.

"They initially thought it was going to be maybe a traffic accident, a hit-and-run or something like that, and then when they came to the body they discovered the gunshot wound," Capt. Mark Salazar with the Fresno Police Department said.

Investigators say the victim is in his 20s or 30s but police couldn't identify him right away. They don't know if he was shot here or somewhere else, but they found bullets or casings near the body.
They'll be trying to find surveillance video from nearby businesses and maybe Caltrans. This is Fresno's 39th homicide of the year - one less than at this time last year.
