TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- Around 5:30 Monday morning, the Tulare County Fire Department received a call for a reported house fire on Avenue 176 in Springville.

Over a dozen engines responded and investigators say it took close to four hours to put the fire out.

Flames and a plume of smoke could be seen from miles away on Monday morning.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Department confirms the fire claimed the life of at least one person.

"He is my landlord, when he wasn't sick, he was sick, he used to come over here and talk for what seemed like hours, but he hadn't been able to do that lately because he is sick," says Mark Seitz, who lives on the road where the fire broke out.

He has known his neighbor for 11 years.

Mark says his neighbor was in his late 80s and didn't have much family around.

But considers him a good man, who enjoyed his time outdoors, church and his pets.

"I think he had two cats and two or three cats, that's why he built that little fence up front," recalls Mark.

He continues to share, "When he could work, he would go around and mow and make sure everything was alright."

Investigators say by the time firefighters arrived, at least half of the home was engulfed in flames, making it difficult to recover any remains.

Firefighters searched through the home multiple times and during the final search, found a body and what is believed to be animal remains.

"This had been burning for a while, so there was a lot of debris," explains Tulare County Fire Captain Francisco Benitez.

Captain Benitez continues, "It took about three and a half to four hours to completely extinguish. We received assistance from Cal Fire and Porterville City Fire, as far as the suppression side goes."

Investigators say it could be more than a week before they complete the investigation.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
