According to Fresno Police, around 10:14 p.m., officers received reports of shots fired from a ShotSpotter activation in the area of Washington Avenue east of First Street.
As officers headed to the area, they were notified that there were two victims who had been shot at a home on Washington Avenue.
Once they arrived, officers learned the two victims had been driven to the hospital by family members.
Officers say that the child was struck once in the leg with a non-life-threatening injury.
The man was struck once in the lower body and was seriously injured but is expected to live.
Both victims' identities have not been released.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Paul Benefield of Fresno, was found at the home with injuries to his face and head.
Detectives learned that Benefield and the adult victim were attending a birthday party at the home when they got into an argument. Benefield took out a handgun and started shooting multiple times at the man.
During the shooting, the toddler was hit by a bullet.
Several other people attending the party attempted to stop Benefield and wrestle the gun away from him, causing injuries to his face and his head.
Although Benefield was arrested, he is being treated at the hospital for his injuries.
Fresno Police say once released from the hospital, he will be booked into the Fresno County Jail and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Fresno Police Department.
