Sparks flew across the road as the driver of the white truck appears to have attempted to stop -- but it was too late.
"When our officers got here, we found that there were two individuals -- both juveniles -- that were on the ground, unconscious and injured," said Fresno Police Lieutenant Justin Hoagland.
Both children were taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where the driver of the moped, 13-year-old Dominiq Puentes, died from his injuries.
The 12-year-old passenger is still there recovering.
Palm and Bullard Avenues were busy Saturday, as Puente's family mourned in the spot where Puentes was hit.
Balloons and candles were part of a memorial left for him -- a sight local business owners say has become too common.
"Very sad, very sad. I feel sorry for the family. And this is not the first accident that happens over here all the time," said Tony Saleh, who owns the Chevron location on the intersection of Bullard and Palm.
Saleh said what happened Friday is not the first fatal crash that has happened right in front of the Chevron location he owns.
Action News was on the scene of this 2020 crash that claimed the lives of four people and left three others hospitalized.
Investigators said then that they believed someone driving a Mustang blew a red light at Palm and Bullard at a high rate of speed.
"Everybody's in a hurry. Everybody's always in a hurry." said Saleh.
Investigators are still looking into what caused Friday night's crash.
Meanwhile, those mourning Puentes say he was a student at Fresno Unified School District.
The district released a statement to Action News:
"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Dominiq Puentes, who was one of our students at Phoenix Secondary Academy and who had previously attended Tenaya Middle School. We know this loss is felt beyond these two sites, as he impacted many lives throughout the community with his joyful spirit and big smile. We have emotional supports available for students and staff, and encourage parents to speak with their children to utilize these resources as they process their grief. We ask everyone to keep the Puentes family and friends in their thoughts during this difficult time."
Action News also spoke with his father, who says his family is heartbroken trying to process what's happened.
Meanwhile, the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
