World Ag Expo draws thousands to Tulare as event boosts local economy

TULARE, Calif. (KFSN) -- It's the busiest week of the year at the International Agri-Center in Tulare- as the World Ag Expo kicks off its 59th year.

Thousands have arrived at the International Agri-Center for Day 1 of the World Ag Expo.

This year's expo features more than 1,200 exhibitors across 2.6 million square feet of exhibit space, along with dozens of nonprofits selling food throughout the grounds.

The Tulare Chamber of Commerce says the overall economic impact is estimated at 60 million dollars.

"For any local economy. When you're bringing money in like that, that is money that's going into your targeted occupancy tax, you also have sales tax revenue, so it's helping with your roads and other projects within the community," explains Donnette Silva, with the Tulare Chamber of Commerce.

The show typically welcomes more than 100,000 visitors each year, including attendees from 50 countries.

"What's really important is we're drawing people right here to Tulare County, one of the top reproducing ag counties consistently in California. So what a better place to bring people from all over the world to really see agriculture and what it's all about," mentions Megan Lausten, with the World Ag Expo Media and Marketing team.

The reach goes beyond the grounds as local restaurants, hotels and other businesses also benefit from visitors spending their time and money in the Valley.

One local restaurant reported its sales go up by at least 15% during the week of the event.

"It is significant here. When you look at over $60 million dollars, that's an awful lot of money to be coming into our region. And that's exactly what it does. It provides revenue that helps to support city services, even police and fire," says Donnette Silva.

The World Ag Expo runs through Thursday February 12. You can purchase tickets online, or at the door for $21.
