The California Highway Patrol received reports of a Toyota that stopped in the middle lane of southbound Highway 41, north of Highway 180.

As the disabled vehicle remained on the highway, a 33-year-old woman driving a Kia crashed into the back of the Toyota.

The 3-year-old child in the Kia was wearing a seatbelt but was not secured in a child safety seat.

The child suffered major, life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he died days later.

A man who was a passenger in the Kia was also hospitalized with major injuries.

The 31-year-old man in the Toyota was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Officers say the 31-year-old driver may have been under the influence of alcohol and are waiting for the results of a toxicology report.

The crash remains under investigation.
