Fresno police say Deloney was beaten, then stabbed, after a large fight on Grant Avenue and Orchard Street around 4 p.m.
"Mr. Deloney was suffering from what appeared to be a possible puncture wound, stabbing wound," Fresno Police Lt. Brian Valles explained. "At this time, we're still trying to understand what the object was."
A shoe and some clothing were left behind at the scene after police say the large group fled.
"It's hard to say why this is occurring but detectives have gathered witness statements that indicate he was possibly the target of this assault by multiple individuals," Lt. Valles said.
Deloney was taken to the hospital, where he died.
This is the city's 14th homicide of the year, compared to 19 this time last year.
"We do know that Mr. Deloney was a member of the unhoused community and we can't say that's a reason why," Lt. Valles stated.
Fresno Police surrounded the area for several hours searching for multiple suspects.
"It's information that detectives need in cases like this that actually potentially lead to identifications, additional witnesses and assist with the apprehension and prosecution," Lt. Valles said.
Police say they are still early in the investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact them or Crime Stoppers.
