"The leads that are available, all active leads that have been provided to us, we're looking into," said CHP Los Banos Sgt. Myles Anderson.
On the afternoon of July 9, several law enforcement agencies responded to an area near the San Luis Reservoir, approximately 12 mi west of Los Banos in Merced County.
"At approximately 12:19 p.m., our Merced Communications Center received a call about a potential missing person in the vicinity of State Route 152 eastbound at Lower Cottonwood Road," said Sgt. Anderson.
Authorities quickly made a tragic discovery.
"A deputy from the Merced County Sheriff's Department, as well as CHP personnel, responded to the scene and located a deceased Hispanic male adult within a white Tesla," said Sgt. Anderson.
CHP Los Banos identified the male adult as 42-year-old Javier Becerril of Hollister.
"I can tell you that it is, in fact, being investigated as a homicide," said Sgt. Anderson.
Authorities said that the decision was due to the case's suspicious circumstances.
The family organized a GoFundMe to help cover funeral and memorial expenses as well as provide support for Javier's children.
In the description of the fundraiser, the family remembered Becerril as "a kind heart, a generous spirit, and always willing to help those he loved."
As news of Becerril's sudden death spread, fellow DoorDash drivers in the Hollister community laid flowers and candles at a makeshift memorial outside the Safeway grocery store.
Drivers said Becerril made routine deliveries from the supermarket, now a tribute to their colleague.
CHP officials urge anyone with information in the case to contact the CHP Central Division, Major Crimes Unit or the Merced Communications Center.
