TULARE COUNTY, Calif. (KFSN) -- As millions of Americans prepare to hit the road this holiday weekend, local law enforcement has a message for people traveling on these busy roads.

"The CHP is gonna provide an increased presence for the holiday weekend, ensuring that the motoring public is operating safely, obeying laws, and everyone is able to celebrate the 250th birthday of our nation safely," explains Sgt. Rob Hicke, with the California Highway Patrol in Visalia.

Roads across the state will be filled with travelers headed to Independence Day festivities.

AAA anticipates the busiest time to travel will be on Friday between 3 and 8 in the evening, Saturday morning, with thousands likely headed to the coast, and Sunday.

"We are anticipating about 72.2 million Americans traveling at least 50 miles or more from their homes, and here in California, it's going to be about 8.94 million. Last year, in 2025, we saw 8.9 million people traveling in California," details Doug Johnson, who is a spokesperson for AAA.

Among the millions, there are also thousands of locals ready to celebrate America's 250th birthday.

Like Matt Caserza and his family, who will spend the weekend in Lake Tahoe.

Matt, who headed out early to avoid traffic, has a message for those on the road, "Just be patient if you are gonna drive fast you are not gonna get there that much quicker than anyone else, just be patient and be kind to everyone else on the road."

To avoid traffic, AAA suggests leaving before noon on Friday or once the fireworks shows begin on Saturday.

The CHP also reminds people to drive the speed limit; it could even help you save on gas.

Plus, people should always drive sober, as Sgt. Hicke explains, "Impairment isn't just alcohol; it includes medication, drugs, any substance that can impair your ability to drive a car could lead to disastrous results."

CHP maximum enforcement period begins Thursday evening at 6 p.m., and goes through the holiday Sunday night at 11:59 p.m.
