The Community Water Center has been working on drilling a well in the center of town since April.
It will connect to a new 360,000 gallon Orosi Public Utilities District water tank three miles down the road.
"This is a tank site that will hold a lot of the water supply for East Orosi, and provide more pressure to the community, and then the water will be brought from the new well site that's being dug out in Orosi and brought up here to East Orosi," explains Chris De Leon, with Community Water Center.
The $13.5 million project was necessary since the original on-site well was contaminated with high nitrates.
But along Avenue 416, the path between the well and the tank, are about 60 homes, which are also dealing with high levels of nitrate in their wells.
The people who live in those homes are unsure if they too will get access to clean water...
Arturo Yanez is among them, "It's unfortunate that you know you're putting a pipe down through here, and you can't get any water because it's mainly for the community in East Orosi," he continues to share he feels, "Angry, frustrated. We have been here for years, you are doing one thing for one- but you are not doing one thing for others who have wells that have dried up."
We first met Arturo three years ago when his well ran low.
Since then, local non-profits, like Self-Help Enterprise, have stepped in to help with repairs and modifications to his well, but those haven't provided a permanent solution.
Now Yanez and others living in limbo hope they too will have access to clean water from the new system that's being put in place so close to their homes.
The Community Water Center says that possibility is currently being evaluated, DeLeon explains, "So there's current samples of what is going to be the capacity, but we won't really know until the Spring of next year when its construction for the well is kind of completed, and then we'll be able to reach out to households in the area."
The Community Water Center says the project should be complete by September of next year.
It also encourages people who do not have access to clean water to reach out to them for temporary solutions.
