CLOVIS, Calif. (KFSN) -- Clovis Community College is launching a new program inspired by farmworkers.

The course is aimed at keeping those employees competitive.

The new AgTec Workforce program is focused on broadening career pathways.

"It's anyone who wants to just elevate their skills and explore new careers in agriculture, because there are many, many careers in agriculture," AgTec Instructor Juan Carlos Cervantes said.

Cervantes says the program helps students master a wide range of skills related to crop production systems, tool operation, workplace effectiveness and digital literacy.

"Employers want people that can send emails, receive emails, schedule appointments," Cervantes said.

There are 14 core skills students will learn.

That includes basic hand and power tools as well as basic equipment troubleshooting.

The materials are offered in English and Spanish.

Students set their own pace.

It's a hybrid system, so students complete classes online through reading materials and videos.

Then, when they're ready to take an assessment, they'll schedule a time to meet with Cervantes.

The program is free and once students master all of the skills, they will receive an Ag Systems Certificate.

Cervantes says he's already seen the positive impact it can have on a student's career and hopes others will take advantage of the program.

"We expand our horizons, so they're looking for work that they hadn't considered before, and they're upskilling and up earning, if you will," Cervantes said.

The AgTec program will be taught at Clovis Community College's Herndon campus.

They are still accepting students, and the program officially begins September 2.
