MADERA, Calif. (KFSN) -- Last October, the official groundbreaking took place for Madera Unified's newest campus: King Husein School.

This October, that empty land will be filled.

"You know, we've seen all of the groundwork, the foundation being built, and so it's massive behind me and it's really exciting to see the progress," Principal Christina Riche said.

Riche will be principal to about 1,000 students in TK through eighth grade when it opens.

Having all the students on one campus is a new concept for the district.

The school is named after Madera Unified alum and founder of SPAN Construction, King Husein.

He donated 50 acres of land to make the project possible.

"I think it's great for the students to know, too, when they come that he believes so much in education that he provided the land for it to be built," Riche said.

Matt Heiss of Darden Architects says the school will have 10 total buildings.

That includes one dedicated to STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

In addition to the academic wings, the multipurpose building features tall ceilings.

You'll also see arching roof lines, designs Heiss says were intentional.

"I think the buildings are very evocative of the educational experience, and we really wanted to try and embody the spirit of learning, growth and opportunity in the design of the buildings themselves," Heiss said.

Outdoor features will include ball fields, play courts and a unique covered basketball court.

"The idea was to provide that gym type space that you can see at a traditional middle school, but provide something that's a little bit more flexible for the elementary school students as well, to use for PE instruction and different sports teams," Heiss said.

Riche says she hopes this shows the community the investment the district is making in its students.

"This school is not just going to be a building. It's going to be we're building our future, and so our future is going to be rooted in relationships and growth and achievement," Riche said.

The school is set to open in August 2026.

The district is still working to determine school colors and the school mascot.
