Dine and Dish: Al's Cafe in west central Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Al's Cafe on Olive Avenue, west of Highway 99, has so many regulars that the staff often knows what they want before they even order.

"They are super fast," says Al's Cafe Manager Sandy Richardson. "Sometimes, they're like dinging the bell. Come get your food. I just put the ticket up."

Their unique chile verde is extremely popular.

"The chile verde is red," says Al's Cafe Owner Anna Contreras. "Why is that? My mom and dad's two flavors. My mother was Sicilian. My dad was from Guanajuato, Mexico, and they just wanted some food that was different. Something nobody else had."

Al and Mary Contreras started with a small cafe just down the street from ABC30 in 1985.

Fifteen years later, they took over a former fast-food spot.

Anna's parents have passed, but their recipes live on.

"I'm very proud to continue everything," she said.

Their gravy is also slathered over the chicken fried steak and biscuits and gravy, which keeps people coming back.

"Definitely the quality of the food," Richardson said.

We also got a look at the chicken salad, beef Philly and nachos.

"We have everything -- tacos, hamburgers, pancakes, Mexican food," Anna said.

That includes chile relleno with beans and rice.

"The food is really good," Richardson said. "It's home-cooked food."

You can even request music to go along with your meal.

"You name the genre, I've got it," Richardson said.

"We make you feel at home," Anna said. "Anybody can come in here and eat alone. You're never alone here. It's cheerful."
