Easing anxiety for students as new school year begins

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- School campuses are buzzing once again -- a sign that class is back in session.

For Fresno State senior Camalah Saleh, a new semester means a new chapter.

"I'm really excited," Saleh said. "A little nervous because I am taking a lot of classes, but I'm excited to see the life that our campus is."

While heading back to school is exciting, it can be stressful and nerve-wracking.

"It is the fear of the unknown and being uncertain of what to expect," says Dr. Garine Lepejian with Kaiser Permanente Fresno.

School readiness isn't just about having the right supplies; it's also about making sure that students are feeling mentally prepared.

Dr. Lepejian explains that it's okay to feel nervous on the first day.

"Having jitters to start the school year for all ages is very common," she said.

To help ease anxiety, Dr. Lepejian says it's important for families to connect with their kids and ask about their feelings.

Disconnecting from electronic devices and creating conversations at home are some ways that can take away the uncertainty.

"It's important to talk more about it and ask deeper questions," Dr. Lepejian said.

Doctors also suggest breathing exercises to help calm the nervous system.

For Saleh, creating a routine and staying organized helps ease her nerves heading into her final year.

"I like my list -- I like my calendar, just so I can visually see it," she said. "I like to hang out with my friends when I can, and my family. Whenever I have any free time, I'm always hanging out with them, getting coffee."

By keeping some of these steps in mind, it can help students start the year off strong and set them up for success.
