Javene Curtice and her family moved from Merced to Reno in 2012 and built a life there. That changed after the Hawk Fire ignited last Saturday. The fire burned more than 15,000 acres and destroyed dozens of homes, including the Curtice family's home
Curtice said the family was prepared to evacuate as fire conditions worsened.
"It just happened so fast. We were aware of the fires. We had packed, we were ready to go," Curtice said.
As they left in their trailer, the family could see the glow of the flames from their neighborhood.
"All of a sudden it was just right down the hill," Curtice said.
The family evacuated with hopes that their home of 12 years would survive. Instead, they later learned it had been destroyed.
"It was devastating. You know hold out hope, that maybe it missed your house but unfortunately not," Curtice said.
While weather conditions remain a concern for firefighters, crews continue making progress on the Hawk Fire. For the Curtice family, only debris, rubble and a standing chimney remain where their home once stood.
Curtice said the house held years of family memories.
"All of our kids have grown up there. Birthday parties, holidays, graduations, everything happened in that home," she said.
The family was able to return to the neighborhood this week and is currently staying with neighbors while they figure out their next steps.
Despite the loss, Curtice said they are grateful for the support they've received from the community.
"Everybody is just trying to provide help for us or 'What can we get for you?' We're very grateful for our community," Curtice said.
